Polis Ball Pit

The Polis ball pit is a project I worked on in the summer of 2020. The idea was to create a giant ball pit that was lit from the floor. The balls of the pit are clear and so the light diffusion was interesting, especially since the lights could be programed to change colors and all kinds of neat things. You can still see and go into the ball pit today at Hopscotch in San Antonio.

In order to light the floor, the design that we went with was a floor that would have slots to insert light strips into. This layer of the floor would then be covered finally with matte, semi-opaque plexiglass. Kyle and I cut hundreds of strips with the table saw. The job got a little sketchy when we got to the very end of the plywood. The strips were about and inch or so wide.

We also had to cut holes in the frame to run the electrical lines and other infrastructure for the ball pit. I wish I had video of the ball pit in its final phase, but I don’t, so I just have to live with that. So go see it in San Antonio.
